What are the benefits of HBOT?
There are two main benefits from HBOT:
1
Hyperoxygenation - HBO provides oxygen to compromised tissue areas with
marginal blood flow.2
Angiogensis + Neovascularization - HBO promotes the growth of new blood vessels. These vessels
bring nutrition and oxygen to injured tissue, helping the body heal.
Minimal Side Effects
The most common side effects are:- Sinus Squeeze
- Tympanic membrane damage
Who Benefits From HBO?
Diabetic PatientsHyperbaric Oxygen therapy treats diabetic wounds of the lower extremities in patients who have:
- Type I or II diabetes and has a lower etremity wound that is due to diabetes.
- A wound classified as Wagner grade III or higher (refer to chart below).
- Patient has failed an adequate course standard wound therapy.
What is a wound classified as Wagner Grade III or higher?
The Wagner Grading System:| Grade 1 | Superficial Diabetic Ulcer |
| Grade 2 | Ulcer Extension:
|
| Grade 3 | Deep ulcer with abscess or Osteomyelitis |
| Grade 4 | Gangrene to portion of forefoot |
| Grade 5 | Extensive gangrene of foot |
HBOT Also Treats the Following Diagnosis:
- Acute carbon monoxide intoxication
- Decompression illness
- Gas embolism
- Gas gangrene
- Acute traumatic peripheral ischemia
- Loss of function, limb, or life is threatened. Crush injuries and suturing of severed limbs
- Progressive necrotizing infections (necrotizing fascitis)
- Acute peripheral arterial insufficiency
- Preperation and preservation of compromised skin grafts (not for primary management of wounds
- Chronic refractory Osteomyelitis, unresponsive to conventional medical and surgical management
- Osteoradionecrosis as an adjunct to conventional treatment
- Soft tissue radionecrosis as an adjunct to conventional treatment
- Cyanide poisoning
- Actinomycosis, only as an adjunct to conventional therapy when the disease process is refractory to antibiotics and surgical treatment
